2 suspects in Grunwald murder case to be tried in Fairbanks

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) – Two suspects in a high-profile southcentral Alaska murder case will be tried in Fairbanks.

Anchorage television station KTVA reports Judge Gregory Heath on Monday granted a change of venue motion for Bradley Renfro and Austin Barrett.

They are charged with murder, kidnapping and other charges in the death of 16-year-old David Grunwald, who was beaten and shot in November 2016.

The change of venue from Palmer follows convictions in the case for two others.

A jury in May convicted Erick Almandinger on nine charges, including first-degree murder. Dominic Johnson was convicted of murder and other charges in December.

Judge Heath cited publicity surrounding previous trials as one reason for the move.

Almandinger will be sentenced this month, a hearing the judge says will draw even more media attention.
